Reflection Verses:  17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

As Jesus calls the first disciples, it’s amazing how instantly they responded to Jesus’ request. These men were fishermen and therefore when they followed Jesus, they were leaving behind their business. The words “At once” suggest that there was no hesitation on the part of the disciples. They didn’t think about it and budget how much money they’d be losing or question how soon they would be done so they could get back to work. They dropped everything and immediately followed.

A year ago, I felt God calling me into full-time ministry and this is the passage of scripture he directed me to. The part that was most striking was “at once.” Although it felt uncomfortable to leave my job, I knew God was calling, so I didn’t hesitate. I knew that if Jesus calls, He will take care of the details. I don’t believe that every Christian is called to full-time ministry, but we are all called to follow Jesus.

Many times, when Jesus calls on us to show up, we begin to look at everything we have going on to see where we can fit Jesus in — extra hours at work, work we bring home, our kids’ schedules, sleep, television, a love interest, our friends, and the list goes on. And If we can’t fit him in, we’re ok saying “I’ll pass.” We are often too consumed with our “busyness.” While we aren’t all called to leave our business, we should all be willing to leave our busyness for the sake of the kingdom, without hesitation.

Reflect:

  • What are you busy with that keeps you from showing up for the sake of the kingdom? What net is Jesus calling you to leave behind?
  • During this season of Lent New Horizon is having two “Hour of Power” gatherings for prayer. Take a minute now to put them on your calendar and plan to be there. And when the day comes, don’t give in to the temptation not to come. Just follow Jesus and show up…
    • Wednesday, March 15th from 7pm – 8pm
    • Wednesday, March 29th from 7pm – 8pm

Prayer: God, help me not to be too busy for the things that are important to you. Help me to show up when the church gathers. Help me to put you and my brothers and sisters in Christ first. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
